High Angle Rescue
4th & D Sts NW
Platoon 3 was dispatched for the reported construction accident with a person pinned.  Units arrived to find a man who had been struck and then fell into a concrete moving bucket.  The man had then been carried across the site before he was noticed.  Members secured the man in a stokes basket and used an on-site crane to move the victim down to street level from the roof.

Below Grade Rescue
1999 K St NW
Platoon 1 was dispatched for the report of an injured construction worker.  The patient had fallen off of a scaffolding and part of the scaffolding then fell on the patient.  Construction workers had started CPR prior to arrival.  Members packaged the patient in a stokes basket and used a crane on-site to move the victim to street level where EMS handled patient care.  A pulse and respirations were restored prior to transport.

Platoon 1 was dispatched to assist with an unstable scaffolding.  Members used chains and come-alongs to stabilize the scaffolding.

High Angle Rescue
11th & K Sts NW
Platoon 1 was dispatched for the confined space rescue.  Upon arrival, units found 2 injured construction workers who had been struck by a steel rebar mesh cage which was being carried by a crane 8 stories above.  Members from Rescue Squad 1 packaged the two workers with the assistance of Squad 2.  Firefighter's Palmer and C. Smith attended to the patients during transport in the stokes basket using the on-site crane.  Patient care was then transferred to EMS.

High Angle Rescue

Platoon 3 was dispatched for the high angle rescue for the report of a crane operator with a medical emergency.  Members arrived and ascended the tower crane to find a patient with altered mental status.  Members set up a lowering system and packaged the patient on the platform in limited space.  F/F David Keefe rode along with the patient to the roof of the building where patient care was taken over by firefighters and EMS on the scene.

Platoon 2 was dispatched for the report of a person in the water near Kingman Island.  RS-1 used both rescue boats to search the area along with members from RS-3 and the fireboat.  After extensive efforts, it was determined there was no person in the water.

Technical Rescue

Platoon 2 was dispatched for the confined space rescue.  Upon arrival, members found an injured construction worker at the bottom of a 70 foot deep construction hole.  Members descended into the hole and began assessing the patient.  They packaged him in for removal with a crane in the stokes basket.  The patient was then transferred to EMS for care.

Bus into Building

Platoon 4 was dispatched to assist RS-3 with the bus into the building.  Units arrived to find a City Circulator bus into a building.  RS-1 assisted with the shoring operation of the building.

Rescue Squad 1 and 2 were dispatched in the middle of relief time to help Truck 5 on the scene to remove a person from the roof of an abandoned house.  RS-1 arrived to find the victim on the roof unconscious.  The victim was "acquiring" the copper roof off the house.  Metropolitan Police noticed the person and pursued them.  Firefighters Sviland and Keefe of platoon 3 and Firefighter Spellers of RS-2 platoon 4 ascended a ground ladder to gain access to the patient on the roof.  They packaged the patient in the stokes basket.Technician Burton and Firefighter Rimm of Platoon 4 set up a system and lowered the patient to the ground.

Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched to assist Rescue Squad 2 with an entrapped person.  Upon arrival RS-2 found a person stuck in an air vent.  The person was allegedly trying to break into the store.  RS-2 used a rope system from above while RS-1 helped from below.  The person was then turned over to MPD custody.

Platoon 3 was called to assist with the car into the building.  RS-1 arrived to find a SUV who crashed into the Fire Department shop.  Rescue Squad 3 (collapse team) was also called to evaluate the structure of the building.

Members of platoon 4 conducted an Ice Rescue Drill at the quarters of the fireboat today.  Recent cold weather made for icy conditions in the water.

Rescue Squad 1 was called to remove a large piece of ice which was dangerously hanging off an awning several stories above the ground.  Firefighter Waddy used a hook to break the ice and remove it.

 
Union Station

Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched to Union Station to assist with a worker who was trapped under a cabinet.  Rescue Squad 1 found the man already removed from under the cabinet upon arrival.

Water Rescue

Tidal Basin NW

October 23rd 2006

Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched to the Tidal Basin for the report of 2 deer in the water.  Rescue Squad placed rescue boat in service to rescue the 2nd deer after MPD had difficulties with their boat. Firefighters Sviland and Keefe operated the boat with animal control; and an Officer from MPD on board.  The Deer were tranquilized before they were removed.

Technical Rescue from Elevator
Woodley Park Metro
August 11, 2006

Rescue Squad 1 responded to assist in the rescue of a family stuck in the elevator at the Woodley Park Metro Station.  Firefighters set up rope systems and lowered rescuers down on top of the elevator.  Firefighter Bagdovitz along with rescuers from Rescue Squad 2 were lowered down the elevator shaft to the top of the elevator car.  The rescuers then assisted the victims into safety gear.  Firefighter Bagdovitz then assisted the family of 5, one by one, up the elevator shaft utilizing a haul system set up by other members of Rescue Squads 1 & 2.   All victims were brought to street level with no injuries.

Firefighter Chris Birch of Rescue Squad 1 Platoon 2 and Alumni Sgt. McGuire along with other members of the special Operations Battalion participated in a 2 week Technical Rescue Drill along with members of the U.S. Army's Special Rescue Engineer Company.
